Coton Hill in Shrewsbury inbound to be closed this Sunday

Related topics: Community

Motorists visiting Shrewsbury town centre this weekend are being advised that Coton Hill will be closed to inbound traffic from its junction with Berwick Road to Cross Street, between 8am on Sunday (3 March 2013) and 6am on Monday (4 March 2013).

Cross Street and Howard Street will be closed between these times to allow resurfacing to take place as part of the northern gateway enhancement scheme, and Coton Hill inbound will be closed to allow this work to be carried out safely.

Closing Coton Hill inbound and putting in place a diversion will help to avoid long delays on this approach to the town centre and mean that traffic can be kept flowing, rather than having to queue at temporary traffic lights.

While they are on site, workers will also take the opportunity to resurface a stretch of road near the sorting office on Castle Foregate after a number of potholes appeared during the recent cold spell.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for highways, said:

“Though this closure will cause some disruption to road users, the important message is that Shrewsbury will be open for business on Sunday and people can still access the town, though may need to take a different route in.  I hope drivers will bear with us while this important work to improve this key entrance to the town is carried out.”

Andrew Bannerman, local Shropshire Councillor for Quarry and Coton Hill, said:

“We are nearing the end of this project and I hope residents will understand the necessity of this closure.  The end result should be a big improvement to this end of town.”

While Coton Hill inbound is closed, a signed diversion route will be in place via Ellesmere Road, Harlescott Lane, Whitchurch Road, Ditherington Road, Spring Gardens, St Michael’s Street and Castle Foregate.

Information letters are being delivered to affected residents and businesses, and advance warning signs will be placed on site.

On Sunday, information signs will be placed at Heathgates Island informing of the work and indicating an alternative route via Telford Way.
