Porthill Road in Shrewsbury to close for gas main work

Related topics: Highways, transport and environmental maintenance / Partner organisations

Porthill Road in Shrewsbury will be closed for approximately two weeks from Monday 8 August to enable Cadent Gas to complete gas main replacement work that was temporarily suspended earlier this year.

During the earlier work, as operatives progressed towards the Pengwern Road junction it was identified that the gas main deviated into the centre of the road. As a result, Cadent had to temporarily suspend work on the section of Porthill Road between the Shrewsbury School entrance and the Pengwern Road junction.

It has now been established that Cadent will require a full road closure on Porthill Road to complete the outstanding work – and this work will be carried out during the school holiday period to minimise disruption and reduce the impact on nearby schools.

Whilst the gas main work is being carried out  Severn Trent Water will be working within the planned road closure to rectify a blockage within its sewer network. Incorporating these works into the planned road closure will reduce the need for further disruption on Porthill Road at a later date.

A signed diversion route will be in place while the road is closed, and access to affected properties will be maintained.

Residents and businesses within the affected area will be notified via a letter drop, and advance warning signs.

The proposed surface dressing scheme for Porthill Road has been deferred to allow Cadent and Severn Trent Water to complete their work. The surface dressing scheme will be programmed separately at a future date.
