iTea and Biscuits Week at Shropshire Broadplaces from Monday

Related topics: Community / Leisure, culture and heritage

To encourage more older people to take their first steps with a computer, Age UK are co-ordinating national ‘iTea and Biscuits’ week between the 17-21 September 2012.  As part of this campaign, Shropshire Broadplaces are holding a range of sessions where people can come along and discover just what getting online has to offer.

There are a variety of drop-in sessions being held at various venues all over Shropshire, and computers with an Internet connection available for everyone to use.  Anyone attending is welcome to have a go anything, from switching on a computer for the first time, surfing the net or just having a chat with volunteers about the benefits of using the Internet.

40% of adults over 65 have never used the Internet, and this figure sharply increases to 73% of adults over 75 who have never been online, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for the voluntary and community sector, said:

“Whether you are a complete beginner who has never touched a computer before, or maybe you know the basics but would like to find out more, pop along to one the Broadplace drop-in sessions where you will find lots of friendly and informal support.”

There are events running throughout the county.  For details of venues, dates and times please contact Sara or Flavia at Shropshire Broadplaces on 01743 252571.
