Council to continue to work with Shrewsbury traders to encourage visitors

Shropshire Council will be working closely with local traders to encourage more people into Shrewsbury town centre in the run up to Christmas due to the success of the town’s Spectacular Sundays promotion.

The promotion, which includes various shops opening for the first time and the council offering reduced rates in its car parks on Sundays, started on 21 July 2012.  Since then, traders have reported an increase in the number of people visiting the town and its shops.

With the promotion now drawing to a close (Sunday 9 September 2012), the council is looking to continue to work with the traders to come up with new ways to increase trade in the run up to Christmas.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for parking, said:

“We are going to be working closely with Shrewsbury’s traders over the next few weeks to continue to encourage more visitors, improve their experience of our fantastic town centre and try out new ideas.

“The success of recent weeks and the response to our new branding for Shrewsbury as ‘the original one off’ could be even greater if we continue to work together.  We’re well on the way to the town becoming a significant, nationally-recognised destination for visitors, and this can only boost our economy and create jobs.”

Andrew Bannerman, Shropshire Councillor for Quarry and Coton Hill, added:

“This has been a very successful initiative, showing how working together brings results.  We need to keep making progress on all fronts – marketing, access and the visitor experience.   Shrewsbury has all the ingredients to become one of the most successful towns in the country.”
