Recognition for Ludlow volunteer
Volunteer Alan Stewart (left) with Ludlow Mayor Tony Pound.
Ludlow local resident Alan Stewart was successful in a national newspaper competition which aimed to find people who contribute to their local communities and highlight this as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Alan has been extremely active in his community, undertaking a regular recycling and litter-picking schedule as part of Ludlow’s “Pride of Place” community group, as well as expanding the scale and scope of the group.
Commenting on the receipt of his ‘Diamond people award’, Alan Stewart said:-
“It is nice to be singled out, but really this award belongs to all the volunteers who work with me to help keep Shropshire clean and green. The actions we take are a good thing for the area, and it positively shows Shropshire Council, Veolia and voluntary organisations working in harmony. I hope this award will hopefully increase our volunteer numbers still further, and encourage more people to volunteer to take action on composting, recycling and litter-picking.”
Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for waste management, said:-
“I am really pleased Alan has been recognised for his environmental volunteering as co-ordinator of Ludlow Pride of Place, an active volunteer Master Composter and a director of Shropshire Community Recycling Ltd. Alan puts in hundreds of unpaid hours each year to make his area a better place for everyone. He makes a real difference in his community locally, but also with global impact.”
The competition was organised by the Sunday People newspaper and was sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Ltd. Alan was featured alongside 25 others from all over the UK on a special Roll of Honour on Sunday 3 June 2012.
