Shrewsbury Town will honour armed forces past and present at a home game against Gillingham on October 31.

Each year, Shrewsbury Town are proud to host a Remembrance Match in tribute to service personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The fixture against Gillingham is Town’s closest home game prior to Remembrance Sunday, which falls on November 8 this year.  Ahead of kick-off, a series of tributes will take place to remember those who have served and sacrificed so much for our country.

Wreaths will be laid pitchside by Mrs Anna Turner, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Wing Commander Paddy Durnin, Station Commander at RAF Shawbury, and representatives from Shrewsbury Town and Gillingham.

The ceremony will also include a rendition of the Last Post, followed by a one-minute silence, which will begin and end on the referee’s whistle.  Players from both sides will wear poppy armbands during the fixture as a further mark of respect.

Councillor Gary Groves, Armed Forces Covenant champion at Shropshire Council, said:

“This Remembrance event is always well attended and I am again impressed with the commitment shown by Shrewsbury Town FC and its supporters.  I know serving personnel and veterans appreciate the event and it means a great deal to the Armed Forces community that their sacrifice is recognised in such a way.”

Shrewsbury Town Chief Executive Liam Dooley said:

“We are incredibly proud to host our annual Remembrance Match and to provide an opportunity for our supporters, players and staff to come together to honour the men and women who have served our country.

“The sacrifices made by our Armed Forces, both past and present, should never be forgotten. It is important that we continue to recognise their courage, while showing our support for serving personnel, veterans and their families.”

Further details and timings for the Remembrance Match will be confirmed in due course.
