Council welcomes announcement of £2 bus fare cap
Shropshire Council has welcomed today’s announcement by the Government of a £2 bus fare cap in England from January 2027, but has again called for fairer funding for public transport in rural areas such as Shropshire.
Rob Wilson, Cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said:
“I welcome today’s announcement which we hope will provide people in the county with an added incentive to travel by bus.
“However, as we said in our letter to Andy Burnham on Monday, we need fairer funding from central government to ensure that bus services in Shropshire are maintained and improved.
“We note the transport secretary’s comments this morning that an ‘affordable, high quality, reliable, public transport network is the backbone of successful local economies’, and hope this recognition means the government will look favourably on our request for fairer funding.”
