Flooding: UPDATE Thursday 4 January 4.10pm

Related topics: Climate change / environment / Highways, transport and environmental maintenance / Public protection

River levels continue to be high; but the indication is that, as the peaks pass, they will recede gradually.

The bus station in Shrewsbury remains closed for today (Thursday 4 January 2024) and tomorrow (Friday 5 January 2024), with many roads into Shrewsbury town centre also closed.

Passengers are advised that the temporary terminals are:

  • New Park Road near Beacalls Lane
  • Abbey Foregate HGV, Coach and Car Park / Abbey Foregate / Old Potts Way (Asda)
  • Frankwell

Raven Meadows Multi-Storey Car Park is currently closed but we will be reviewing the access to it (only via Castle Foregate, and via Meadow Place), and the one-way system operating as two way traffic, as water is across part of the road. In addition, we have had the power down and are dealing with some technical issues.

Audiences for Thursday evening’s pantomime performance will be able to access a shuttle bus to and from Theatre Severn from the Oxon Park and Ride site. Please allow plenty of time for travel.

Flood barriers remain in place in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, and will remain until further notice. The Environment Agency is looking to remove flood defences at Coleham Head at about 4pm today. The road will remain closed until the morning, allowing for waters to subside and the roads to be cleaned.

River levels have peaked in Shrewsbury but levels remain high, so we will see some continued impact on the highways network over the next couple of days. The level reached 4.68m at the Welsh Bridge gauge at 7am this morning (Thursday 4 January).

Bridgnorth is expected to reach a peak of between 4.9m and 5.2m on Friday 5 January am, and our community resilience teams have been in Bridgnorth today offering help and support to people affected.
