Flooding: UPDATE Friday 5 January 12.30pm

Related topics: Climate change / environment / Highways, transport and environmental maintenance / Public protection

The effects of flooding continue to be felt across the county,  but clean-up and recovery operations are already well underway today.

The River Severn in Bridgnorth has peaked at 4.9m this morning (Friday 5 January 2024), and it is expected to take a while to subside. Our community resilience teams have been in Bridgnorth offering help and support to people affected and will be in Shrewsbury later today.

Many roads are still closed, but the situation is expected to continue to improve gradually. Our highways teams have begun cleaning roads as soon as it is safe to do so so that they can be reopened promptly.

They are currently working on preparing Smithfield Road, Coton Hill and Chester Street with a view to them reopening this afternoon.

The Atcham to Berwick Wharf road and the B4380 Shrewsbury to Atcham Road have reopened today, and Coleham Head in Shrewsbury has opened with access from Belle Vue over the bridge into the gyratory.

Raven Meadows Multi-Storey Car Park did reopen Friday morning, but has been forced to close to incoming vehicles again due to a power cut.

The bus station in Shrewsbury remains closed for today (Friday 5 January 2024).

Passengers are advised that the temporary terminals are:

  • New Park Road near Beacalls Lane
  • Abbey Foregate HGV, Coach and Car Park / Abbey Foregate / Old Potts Way (Asda)
  • Outside Theatre Severn

Audiences for tonight’s (Friday) pantomime performance will be able to access a shuttle bus to and from Theatre Severn from the Oxon Park and Ride site. Please allow plenty of time for travel.

Flood barriers remain in place in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, and will remain until further notice.

River levels in Shrewsbury remain high, so we will see some continued impact on the highways network over the next couple of days.
