A leading architect has been inspired by children’s play to bring a new hands-on attraction to Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery.

The Imagination Playground has opened at the Shropshire Council-run venue and allows children to let their imaginations run wild to create structures and worlds of their own out of giant foam blocks.

It has been created by award-winning American architect and theatre set designer David Rockwell, who was inspired by watching his own children play.

He said:-

“Creative free play is one of the best ways to help our children grow up happy and healthy. Families are invited to come and enjoy a new experience where children have fun creating bridges and barricades, dragons and dens, rivers and rowing boats, expressing their ideas and whatever else pops into their wonderful imaginations.”

Robert Macey, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and digital, said:-

“Creative play allows children to develop their imaginations, problem solving skills and to enjoy physical activity.

“We are delighted to host the Imagination Playground at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery until the beginning of December, and look forward to welcoming children of all ages to let their imaginations run wild.

“Our museums, libraries, leisure centres, as well as our fabulous countryside, are all places for learning and concentrating on our overall wellbeing, and I think attractions and events such as the Imagination Playground can only enhance these opportunities.”

Imagination Playground is open daily until December and visitors are advised to book their timeslot early as places are limited. The event is suitable for children aged 2+ and is offered to groups for exclusive use from 9.30am to 10.30am weekdays. Charges apply.
