Essential repairs to be carried out on Nut Tree Bridge

Related topics: Highways, transport and environmental maintenance / Partner organisations

Essential repairs are to be carried out on Nut Tree Bridge from 19 June to 11 July [2023], with Sweeny Mountain Road (Whitehaven A495 Junction To Nut Tree Crossroads) closed to traffic while work is carried out.

Normal working hours will be between 9.30am and 4pm.

The work will involve the treatment of surface corrosion to the bottom flanges of the bridges main beams and application of a protective system. There will also be general repointing and replacement of missing masonry work, and the removal of vegetation and moss from the structure.

To carry out the proposed work safely it will be necessary to close Sweeny Mountain Road to vehicular traffic to allow access to the bridge, which includes loading and unloading of plant and materials.

When the road is closed, traffic will be diverted by a signed diversion route.

Access over the bridge will remain available throughout the proposed work, access through the road closure will remain available for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption during the work.

The work will be carried out by Shropshire Council’s term maintenance contractor Kier, with supervision being provided by WSP on behalf of Shropshire Council.
