Shropshire Archives has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation – recognising the quality of the service provided.

Accredited Archive Services ensures the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of our archive heritage.

Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Achieving accredited status demonstrates that Shropshire Council’s archives service has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing, the care of its unique collections, and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

Shropshire Archives awarded Accredited Archive Service status

The Archive Service Accreditation Panel noted the progress and achievements made by the archive service, in particular excellent progress around digital preservation and work with the museum service and libraries.

Rob Gittins, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and digital, said:-

“Our archives service has a strong following locally. I know there is always a great deal of interest in their projects, and people regularly draw on the team’s knowledge and the rich archives to source information for their own research.

“I am delighted to hear our archives service has earned this industry accreditation.”

Shropshire Archives looks after documents, books and photographs telling the story of Shropshire’s history from medieval times to the present day, which if laid out would stretch to six miles. The collection covers the historic county of Shropshire, including the Telford and Wrekin Council’s area.

Fay Bailey, Shropshire Council’s museums and archives manager, added:-

“Shropshire Council’s archives service has a close working relationship with our museums and libraries, and we are pleased that was acknowledged by the accreditation panel.

“There is real depth to the archives we hold and, as well as preserving the documents, we are working, along with many fantastic volunteers, to digitise as much as possible to make the information more readily available to everyone.

“It is wonderful to have received accreditation for the fabulous service we know we have in Shropshire.”
