Longden Road closure at Annscroft Village to Meadow Cottage from 16 August 2021

Longden Road, at Annscroft Village to Meadow Cottage, will be closed to traffic as works to repair a retaining wall are programmed to commence on Monday 16 August 2021, and we envisage the works being completed by Friday 3 September 2021.

Temporary traffic lights were erected earlier in the year following the report of a void forming between the edge of the carriageway and a retaining wall running adjacent to a tributary of the Rea Brook in Annscroft.

The repair works will involve constructing a concrete apron adjacent to the retaining wall up to 9m in length, underpinning scoured areas to the retaining wall with concrete, backfilling the void up to the verge with no fines concrete, drainage work to repair an existing outlet, replacement of damaged concrete posts and tubular rail fencing, and minor surfacing works.

Unfortunately, in order to carry out the proposed works safely, it will be necessary to close the road during off peak hours to vehicular traffic under restricted working between 9.30am and  4pm Mondays to Fridays.

When the road is closed, traffic will be diverted via alternative local roads by a signed diversion route. The road closure will have gatepeople allowing shepherded access for local residents, and will be in place between 9.30am to 4pm. The existing traffic lights will be left in place during the peak hours and overnight.

Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available throughout the proposed work.

The work will be carried out by the council’s term maintenance contractor Kier, with supervision being provided by WSP on behalf of Shropshire Council.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for physical infrastructure, highways and built housing, said:-

“Inevitably there will be some disruption during these works, for which we apologise in advance. Everyone involved will do all that they reasonably can to reopen this stretch of road as soon as possible. I thank residents and road users for their understanding while this important work is carried out.”

Roger Evans, local Shropshire Councillor for Longden, said:-

“This work has been outstanding for some time and many wish it to be completed as soon as possible. The diversion does include some minor roads, and apologies for residents along this route but alternatives are very limited. Access for local residents living in Annscroft will be maintained, as will the scheduled public bus service.”
