Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

Shropshire Libraries is challenging adults and young people to join a countywide community of readers this summer for the chance to win fantastic prizes.

People signing up to the free ‘Shropshire Summer Reads’ challenge (which opened on Saturday 10 July 2021) are asked to read and rate four books of their choice over the summer. Registering for the challenge is easy – just visit  https://shropshire.gov.uk/ libraries/groups-and-support/books-and-reading/shropshire/summer-reads to find a simple joining form or pop into a library for an entry form. Completed entries will be entered in a prize draw for Samsung Galaxy tablets and gift cards worth £25 and £10, kindly sponsored by Veolia and library friends groups across the county.

Mirka Duxberry, Shropshire Council’s library development manager, said:

“Wherever people find themselves relaxing this summer, we recommend an unforgettable read as a key ingredient of any good break. Entering the ‘Shropshire Summer Reads’ challenge for the chance to win great prizes is the icing on the cake!  People can read whatever they like – borrow from the library or download titles for free from our e-book and e-audio library.

“We’ll also be producing some themed book lists to add an extra layer of challenge for those who want to flex their reading muscles a little harder. The challenge runs until 11 September, so there’s plenty of time for everyone to take part.”

It’s free to download books and audiobooks from Shropshire Libraries’ popular e-library at https://shropshire.gov.uk/libraries/find-a-book/e-library/ , while great reading tips, reviews and recommendations are regularly featured on the Shropshire Libraries Reading Group page and local branch pages on Facebook.

Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for communities, place, tourism and transport, said:

“So many of us have turned to a good book for entertainment, distraction and comfort over the past 16 months. What a great idea to connect our summer reading choices with a prizewinning challenge for any Shropshire adult and young person. Thanks to Veolia and library friends groups, there are terrific prizes on offer, so spread your wings and let your imagination take flight this summer with a library card.”
