People across Shrewsbury are being encouraged to help bring some festive fun to the town by joining an online Christmas lights switch-on.

This year there won’t be the usual turning on of the Christmas lights in the town, but people are instead being asked to send in a 10 second video of them switching on their lights at home – and those who do could win a £50 Marks and Spencer gift card.

All videos sent in will be merged into a festive showreel of all video snippets sent in. This video showreel will be shared on social media and with local media, all in the name of spreading the festive spirit around Shrewsbury.

The initiative has been arranged by Shrewsbury shopping centres and supported by Shrewsbury BID.

Kevin Lockwood, Shrewsbury shopping centres manager, said:

“We’re all in need of a little Christmas magic right now.

“This year we’ve sadly not been able to do our normal Shrewsbury town Christmas Lights Switch-on, but just because we can’t all meet up and watch as the town’s festive lights go on, doesn’t mean we can’t have an online switch on.

“All videos are needed by Wednesday 25 November, so if you’ve been toying with the idea of putting the tree and decs up already – well here’s your official request to do so!”

Seb Slater, executive director of Shrewsbury BID, said:

“Although this Christmas is going to be rather different for obvious reasons, projects like this really help bring the Shrewsbury community together.

“We are delighted to support the online Christmas lights switch-on and will be sharing the video across the Original Shrewsbury social media channels.”

Videos can be sent as follows:

a) Send by Facebook messenger to @ShrewsburyShopping
b) Send by Instagram messenger to @Shrewsbury_Shopping

Video tips:

  • Hold your camera phone landscape/sideways so that you capture a wide view of your lights going on.
  • You can film your external Christmas house lights or your interior Christmas lights switching on.
  • Try and aim to keep your video to 10 seconds long.
