Reopening of Shropshire Libraries continues

Related topics: Community / Coronavirus / Leisure, culture and heritage

The reopening of libraries right across Shropshire is well underway with the larger libraries now open and most of those remaining to open next week (w/c 17 August).

Following national guidance Shropshire Council’s library service has been taking a phased approach to reopening in order to ensure the safety of everyone, with reduced opening times and social distancing arrangements in place.

Details of opening arrangements for all libraries are available at https://www.shropshire.gov.uk/libraries/library-news/libraries-reopening/

Michael Lewis, Shropshire Council’s Library Service Manager, said:

“Since our libraries started to reopen we’ve had some really positive feedback from customers. We’ve learnt that there is a real need for computer access, for book browsing, and that people are very reassured by the level of COVID-19 arrangements inside our buildings. Although it’s definitely not ‘business as usual’, getting all our libraries open will be a real milestone and we’re pleased to be welcoming people back.”

In libraries that are reopening customers will be able to browse the shelves and borrow library stock. Wi-fi and computer access will also be available, although library computers will need to be booked in advance by contacting the relevant library.

When visiting any library, customers must by law where a face covering. This also applies to other Shropshire Council-run buildings. Places where face coverings are now mandatory can be found here.

Customers should also note that face coverings are now mandatory in all libraries and other Shropshire council-run buildings.

Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture, leisure, waste and communications, said:

“I would like to say thank you to everyone for being patient and following all safety measures as libraries reopen. We know that the services offered by libraries, both in branches and online, are really valued by our communities and make a great difference to those who use them.
