Shropshire Council’s Shire Services cleaning team at Willenhall E-ACT Academy in Walsall have been awarded two commendations for their outstanding work as part of a special 30th Anniversary Award for Innovations in Dealing with Austerity Measures 2019 (IDAM), organised by the Association of Building Cleaning Direct Service Providers (ABCD).

The prestigious award recognises and promotes the innovative ways in which council cleaning teams have faced the challenges of austerity during the period 2015-2019. It also provides an invaluable opportunity for information to be shared with other councils, recognising the hard work and dedication involved in delivering much-needed quality services to communities.

The team were put forward and commended for two categories ‘Cleaning Team of the Year’ and ‘Innovations for Dealing with Austerity’ due to the difficulties they face on a daily basis at the academy. They never know what to expect when reporting for their shift but continue to do an excellent job regardless.

Jacky Hammett, Shire Services area manager, said:

“We were delighted to have been nominated for this award as our teams work hard under difficult circumstances, and often don’t receive the recognition they should.

“They work together as a team. They have a great ‘can do’ attitude and just get on with the task and deal with whatever has been thrown at them.

“They are always smiling and very loyal and hard-working.

“Although we didn’t win, being commended is a huge achievement and gives the team the recognition they deserve.”

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for Shire Services, added:

“This is excellent news and thoroughly deserved. Our Shire Services teams work tirelessly every day to make a real difference to people’s lives. It’s no great surprise that they’ve been recognised as a national exemplar.”

The team were awarded their commendation certificate during ABCD’s AGM at the House of Commons last week (Thursday 16 May 2019), which was hosted by Jim Fitzpatrick MP.
