The local schoolgirl baked a variety of cakes and encouraged family and friends to do the same for the charity fundraising event at her home in Shrewsbury. Lucy Newell invited all her neighbours and passing dog walkers to pop in for a slice of cake and raised £353 for the local charity.

Lucy wanted to raise money for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin because it’s a cause very close to her heart.

Lucy said:

‘The reason I decided I would raise money for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is because my grandma has dementia and I thought I could do my part to help. My grandma loved baking so that’s why I did a cake sale.”

Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said:

“We want to thank Lucy for her enormous achievement raising £353 just from one cake sale. What I find so heart-warming is the personal experience of Lucy’s grandmother that resonated so much, to the extent that Lucy wanted to fundraise to support local older people.”

The local charity runs 10 dementia support groups and 39 day centres across the county to support local older people. For further information about fundraising for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin call 01743 233123 or visit www.ageukshropshireandtelford.org.uk
