The funding will allow Meriel Lees, who is based at Shropshire Archives until November 2018, to increase her weekly hours from 15 to 30.

These extra hours will support her research into Shropshire family history sources which will then be shared with members of the Shropshire Family History Society and anyone with Shropshire Ancestors.

Lezley Picton, Cabinet member for leisure and culture said:

“We are delighted to accept the Shropshire Family History Society’s generous offer of additional funding for our Archives Intern post. This will make a big difference to what Meriel can achieve in her time with us, and will help to make Shropshire’s fantastic archival resources more accessible to everyone.”

Andrew Bennett, Chairman of the Shropshire Family History Society, said:

“We are really happy to be able to help. The Archives are an indispensable resource for us as family historians. We hope that this project will not only enable a young person to increase her experience, but will add to the material available to researchers in Shropshire.”

All the research produced by Meriel’s work will be highlighted on the Shropshire Archives website at www.shropshirearchives.org.uk
