Gritting and roads update – Tuesday 12 December 2017 (10.30am)

Related topics: Highways, transport and environmental maintenance

Since Thursday 7 December 2017 we have done an average of 20 gritting runs on each route: it is an average as some of the hill routes have been done more than lower lying ones. Over that period we have used 3,400 tonnes of salt. We have just under 14,000 tonnes left in stock and an order for 3,500 tonnes has been placed to replenish stock levels before Christmas.

Crews have been working through the night and even though we had minus 13 at Shawbury last night almost all main routes remain open. Below is a list of routes we are still trying to get open.

Defined network

  • Coalport Road – Broseley – closed due to snow/ice – a tractor-mounted gritter was deployed to the site last night and again this morning.
  • Bridge Road – Broseley – closed due to snow/ice – a tractor-mounted gritter was deployed to site last night and again this morning.
  • B4376 Barrow Road – closed due to trees down.  We’ll deploy contractors when resources become available.
  • B4373 Ironbridge Road – closed due to tree boughs over carriageway – our tree team is working on site today.
  • Monkhopton to Ditton Priors – closed due to snow / ice on steep section. We’ll deploy a tractor-mounted gritter when resources are available.
  • A488 Hope Valley – WPD attended last night to deal with power cables. It was passable with care, but should now be fully open.

Secondary routes

  • Weston Lane, Ditton Priors – closed due to snow / ice
  • Middle Road, Ditton Priors – closed due to snow/ice
  • Oldfield Lane  (on the Bridgnorth to Ludlow road)- closed due to snow/ice
  • Hillside, Ditton Priors – closed due to snow/ice

Local link, rural and estate roads are still being treated, as are footways where resources allow. Our farmer/contractors are continuing to do this minor network and doing a fantastic job, but it will take a while yet to get all minor roads clear.
