Libraries set to launch Reading Well books as part of Health Information Week

Libraries across Shropshire will be launching a new book scheme for adults living with long term conditions from Monday 3 July 2017.

The launch forms part of Health Information Week, a national campaign to promote the good quality health resources that are available to the public.

Reading Well for people with long term conditions scheme

The Reading Well for long term conditions scheme will offer 28 books covering general advice and information on:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Asthma
  • Heart disease
  • Angina
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Stroke
  • Mental health related to living with a long term condition
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Fatigue
  • Pain management

The collection also includes information for family and carers and fiction and personal stories related to living with a long term condition.

The books will be available for anyone to borrow from libraries in Bridgnorth, Whitchurch, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Ludlow, while free reservations for the titles will be offered in all other library branches in the county.

Councillor Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said;

“With the right support, people with long term health conditions and their carers can live well. In the heart of our communities, libraries are well-placed to offer support, information and a welcoming space and it is good to see this role acknowledged so effectively with the introduction of the Reading Well for Long Term Conditions scheme.”

Drop-in advice sessions

Libraries will also be highlighting the new collections with drop-in advice sessions from local health support groups. Sessions include:

Wednesday 5 July – 10am to 12pm
Ludlow Library will be hosting the Ludlow Singing for Lung Health group.
Market Drayton Library will be offering advice from Market Drayton and District Stroke Club.
Representatives from Oswestry and District Stroke Club will be on hand in Oswestry Library.

Monday 3 to Friday 7 July – all day
Information from Diabetes UK  Shrewsbury and District Voluntary Group will be available at Shrewsbury Library throughout the week.

Friday 7 July from 2pm to 2.45pm
Shrewsbury Library – A free, relaxing Flocks of Words music and poetry event.

Reading Well for long term conditions books can also be recommended by health professionals to support treatment. Leaflets giving details of the full book list will also be available at GP practices and pharmacies.
