Road users in Shrewsbury are being reminded that the Roman Road (B4380) approach to Meole Brace roundabout and Hereford Road (A5191) will be closed from Tuesday 18 April 2017 for approximately one week, as part of improvement works at the island.

The closure will be in operation 24 hours a day to allow for the full reconstruction of a section of road leading onto the roundabout and for further improvements to the Roman Road/Hereford Road signalised junction.

During the work, access will be maintained for pedestrians, dismounted cyclists, and vehicles accessing local businesses only.

Diversion routes will be in place for each of the closures, as follows:

  • The Roman Road approach closure will be via Roman Road (B4380), Radbrook Road/Hanwood Road (A488), Edgebold roundabout (A5), Bayston Hill roundabout (A5) and Hereford Road (A5112).
  • The Hereford Road closure will be via Hereford Road / Belle Vue Road (A5191), Longden Coleham/Longden Road and will continue on the above diversion.

Whilst these works are planned to take one week, every effort will be made to complete the works and reopen the roads in time for Shrewsbury Town FC’s home fixture against Southend on Saturday 22 April and before schools return from the Easter break on Monday 24 April.

The work at Meole Brace roundabout is being carried out as part of the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP) and will create a new link road and shared-use pathway through the roundabout, and upgrade the existing traffic signals.

Once the work is completed the roundabout will have the extra capacity needed to accommodate future traffic levels and reduce congestion, and will have improved pedestrian and cyclist facilities.

Under the SITP work will be carried out throughout 2017 to improve five major junctions including Meole Brace roundabout, Sutton Park roundabout, Reabrook roundabout, English Bridge gyratory, and Longden Coleham – including improved crossings at many of these junctions.

The work at Meole Brace roundabout is due to be completed in spring 2017.

About the Shrewbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP)

The SITP aims to encourage drivers to use the ‘inner bypass’ for trips across the town, rather than using routes through the town centre. It is anticipated that it will lead to improved journey times and journey time reliability.

Under the Package a number of improvements are also planned for Shrewsbury town centre to make it more attractive and appealing for pedestrians, and to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to access the town centre and find their way around.
