Irony in literature: University Centre Shrewsbury public talk on 8 March 2017

In the next in University Centre Shrewsbury’s series of public talks, Professor Alan Wall will be exploring a literary device that plays a major part in everyday humour and conversation. Professor Wall’s talk on “A Writer’s Irony” offers a reflection on the way in which writers have engaged with the technique from antiquity to the present day.

Professor Wall, a novelist and poet who teaches creative writing at the university centre, explained:-

“I’ll be considering irony as a fracture on the surface of meaning. Writers have always used it. It lets them exploit the gap between ‘what I’m saying to you’ and ‘what I actually mean’.”
