Ahead of receiving the Best Student-Led Campaign award* at the End of Year Ball, Holly-Elizabeth Smith shared what it has been like to be one of the first undergraduates at University Centre Shrewsbury.

“As we approach the end of the academic year a mix of emotions surface; happiness knowing that summer is on its way but sadness that we have to spend it apart. There’s excitement to see what summer and the next academic year brings but with all these emotions floating around, we can’t help but also be nervous, especially when exams come near.

“It isn’t an everyday occurrence to be able to say that you are part of – or the face of – the first undergraduate cohort of a new Higher Education Institution. It’s been quiet and nothing is kept secret for very long, so that’s made it very interesting. It has been demanding because you cannot hide from lecturers or each other. But it’s special and it’s amazing to see the staff and the community so supportive of us; the administration teams especially are amazing and are more like friends than staff.

“There has definitely been a lot to take away from this year. Some of us have fallen in love, and some out of it. Most of us have changed. We gunged each other; waxed each other and scared ourselves on roller-coasters. We’ve explored Wales and come back with ideas, enthusiasm and a few bruises.

“My personal memorable moments include the BBQ on the first night. It was the first time we were all together and friendships were made. What I didn’t expect was to find some best friends straight away and especially, to fall in love. Eight months on and these people are my absolute rock.

“Obviously, my birthday is going to be one of my highlights. What an amazing two days in London, at Harry Potter Studios and UCL – University College London Students’ Union. There were celebratory drinks and even a proposal. The next day started with opening presents, surrounded by people I had come to love… one lucky lady.

“Next year? Petrified. Next year really matters, everything becomes that bit more ‘grown-up’.

“However much I don’t want to share our wonderful staff, it will great to welcome the next year into University Centre Shrewsbury and into our home.”
