Students and staff at University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) dusted off their egg-and-spoon-race skills for an Old School Sports Day which has raised more than £200 for Sport Relief.

Shrewsbury Sports Village was the venue for the sporting showdown between a team of staff and a team of students on Wednesday 16 March 2016.

Joined by staff from Energize, the teams donned pyjamas and threw themselves into activities including ball games and a three-legged-race.

Student Voice (UCS’s Student Council) Representatives for Activities, Mabo Matysik and Amber Webb, worked closely with Jessica Lightwood from Energize Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin to organise the event.

It was a close competition, with the staff team being crowned the Old School Sports Day champions.

Professor Anna Sutton, Provost of University Centre Shrewsbury, said:

“The students worked extremely hard to organise the Sports Day which was great fun.

“They have lots of ideas for fundraising and I’m really proud of all their efforts.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to Energize for all their support.”

Mabo added:

“We’ve raised £205 so far for Sport Relief and are aiming for a target of £250. It’s a great cause so if anyone hasn’t already donated to Sport Relief and is able to make a donation to our Just Giving page, it would mean a lot to all of us.”

Sport Relief is one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events. It brings the nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives. The money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people both in the UK and abroad.
