Council staff praised for work to make Shrewsbury’s university a reality

The Shropshire Council staff that helped to make Shrewsbury’s new University Centre a reality – and who are now helping to ensure its ongoing success – have been praised by the councillor with responsibility for the project.

University Centre Shrewsbury is a partnership between the University of Chester and Shropshire Council. Staff from the council’s property, premises, legal and finance teams have all played important roles in the formation of University Centre Shrewsbury over the past two years – and many continue to work closely with the University Centre and its students to help ensure its ongoing success.

In particular, Shire Services – the council’s cleaning and catering team – is responsible for the management of Mardol House, University Centre Shrewsbury’s student accommodation, which includes cleaning, maintenance and provision of a new concierge service.

And the council’s finance team offers financial advice and support to students.

Councillor Claire Wild, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for University Centre Shrewsbury, said:

“University Centre Shrewsbury came about as a result of a close and successful partnership between the council and University of Chester.

“But a large number of council services and staff have played vital and important roles in ensuring that the University Centre became a reality, and opened its doors on time and on schedule. These really are the ‘unsung heroes’ of the project so, now that the University Centre is up and running, I think it’s a good time to give them some well-deserved recognition for their efforts. We really couldn’t have done it without them, and I’d like to say a big thank you to them on behalf of Shropshire Council.”
