Residents in Broseley and the surrounding area are invited to give their views on proposals for their local library service.

The consultation starts today (Wednesday 16 September 2015) and will run until Wednesday 28 October 2015.

Shropshire Council and Broseley Town Council have been working together to develop opportunities and explore new ways of delivering library and Customer Service Point services from the existing library building, and the management of the attached public car park.

The proposals are being put forward following months of community conversations with local partners to explore the best options to ensure the future sustainability of the library. We want to stress that no formal decisions have yet been made.

The three options are:

  1. To transfer the responsibility for the management of the library, Customer Service Point and library car park to Broseley Town Council. This means the library will remain in its existing location and opening times will not be affected. Existing library staff will transfer to Broseley Town Council, who will continue to provide the same range of services currently available
  2. The library to remain under council management, though opening hours will be reduced.
  3. This option asks residents if they feel there are any other sustainable and cost effective alternatives the council should consider?

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said:

“Libraries are an integral part of the community and this is why we have been working extremely hard with our partners to ensure we can find sustainable solutions to enable libraries to continue to thrive for future generations to come.

“We very much look forward to hearing people’s views on these proposals.”

Simon Harris, Mayor of Broseley, added:

“The library building in Broseley, the friendly service provided there and the convenient car park are important for many people in the town and the surrounding area. Broseley Town Councillors very much hope that this consultation will attract a high level of response, to help both councils find the best way to maintain and, if we can, improve services within the budgets available.”

Comments can be submitted online by going to shropshire.gov.uk/get-involved and searching for Broseley Library.

Residents can also pick up a questionnaire along with the proposals and Frequently-Asked Questions at Broseley Library.

Deadline for submissions is Wednesday 28 October 2015.
