Canonbury Bridge temporary closure

Related topics: Community

Canonbury Bridge in Shrewsbury will be closed from Monday 7 September 2015 between the hours of 9.30am and 4pm for up to one week, to enable essential repairs to be carried out.

The bridge carries the Canonbury Road over the private road leading to Kingsland Bridge.

The work will involve general maintenance, including the removal of the extensive ivy that is growing in the masonry of the structure.

The bridge must be closed to traffic while the work is being carried out as it is too narrow for the work to be carried out safely with the bridge open to traffic.

When the road is closed, traffic will be diverted locally via Ashton Road and Butler Road.

Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available at the bridge throughout the work.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport said:

“It is appreciated that the bridge closure will cause some inconvenience, and everyone involved will do all that they reasonably can to reopen it as soon as possible.”

Anne Chebsey, local Shropshire Councillor for Porthill, said:

“I am pleased that while repairs are carried out, the bridge will remain accessible for pedestrians and cyclists. I know that every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum for local residents.”
