Young skaters and riders are being invited to hone their skills as part of a special Bridgnorth Skate Jam this weekend (Saturday 20 June 2015).

The event is being organised by Shropshire Council, Bridgnorth Town Council and Canvas, the company that built the skate park. It is being held at Crown Meadow on Innage Lane, and is open to skaters and riders of all abilities.

Sessions taking place on the day include:

  • 11am to 12pm – Beginners session with an experienced instructor. Those wishing to take part should bring their BMX, skateboard, scooter or rollerblades.
  • 12pm to 2pm – Scooter demo with a professional. Those wishing to take part should bring their scooter to join in the session.
  • 2.30pm – Skateboard jam. Those wishing to take part can sign in on the day. There will also be a chance to win some prizes.

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for youth activities, said:

“This is a wonderful facility which has been very much welcomed by many in the area. I would encourage people to go along and see what is on offer.”

Anne Wilson, Bridgnorth Town Council’s Town Clerk, said:

“The skateboard park is a great addition to Crown Meadow and already very well used. Young people have been asking for such a facility in the town for many years and we are pleased that at long last their request has come to fruition with the help of developer and town council funding.”

Christian Lea, a Shropshire Councillor for Bridgnorth East and Astley Abbotts, said:

“Young people have made great use of the skateboard park since it opened last December. The Skate Jam event this Saturday is a great opportunity for skaters and riders to acquire new skills and should prove to be a fun day for all that attend.”

The skate park was officially opened in December 2014. The idea for the skate park had long been discussed in the town, and this was highlighted as a priority in the Bridgnorth Town Plan in 2011. Funding for recreational use was later secured by Shropshire Council and Bridgnorth Town Council, and a long and in-depth consultation process followed, which informed the councils of the location and type of skate facility users wanted to see.
