Shropshire Young Enterprise Celebration of Achievement and Awards Ceremony

A University Centre Shrewsbury-sponsored award for innovation was presented to budding entrepreneurs at a Shropshire celebration evening.

Professor Clare Schofield handed the accolade to the team from the Corbet School, Baschurch, at the county’s Young Enterprise Celebration of Achievement and Awards Ceremony on 14 May 2015.

Professor Schofield heads-up the University Centre’s Sustainable Business and Community Development learning and research area.

Opulent, the winning team from the Corbet School, was recognised for their ability to adapt and innovate their company and their product range which they had created from sheets of plywood with their very own short motivational phrases.

The Innovation Award was one of more than 25 won by young people aged 15 to 19 after successfully setting up and running a range of companies during the past year.

The companies have been created as part of the 2014-15 Young Enterprise Company Programme. The programme is designed to help young people take their first steps in business and develop skills such as team work, financial capabilities, communication, measured risk-taking and confidence in giving presentations.

Professor Schofield said:

“It was a privilege to present the Innovation Award to the Opulent team.

“They are worthy winners of the award and beat off strong competition to be crowned the most innovative business. The pupils have shown remarkable initiative, drive, dedication and business acumen.

“University Centre Shrewsbury is working to support entrepreneurship and innovation, and it was great to recognise enterprising young people in the county.

“They are an inspiration – and ones to watch out for in the business world in future.”

The awards, which form part of an international event, were held at the Park Inn, Telford.

Winner of the Best Overall Company award was Junk Trunk from Newport Girls High School. A total of 30 teams from across Shropshire attended the event, along with hundreds of specially-invited guests.

Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity. It gives young people the opportunity to realise their full potential through a range of practical enterprise programmes, from one-day masterclasses to year-long projects.
