News from our partners Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing

Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing are delighted to announce that their largest new build development site, Hignett Place, Oswestry, was completed at the end of March and is now occupied.

To celebrate, STAR Housing arranged a grand opening of the site on Wednesday 6 May, with the Chair of the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund cutting the ribbon to declare Hignett Place officially open – a fitting testament to Mary Hignett, after whom the street was named following suggestions from the public.

Graham Moss, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Oswestry, said:

“The Rotary Club of Oswestry feels privileged to undertake community work in memory of Mary Hignett, and we are all delighted that her name should also be perpetuated at Hignett Place. It was great to be asked to officially open the site.”

Hignett Place replaces the demolished Swan Lane and is a key element of redeveloping the once troubled estate.

Jason O’Donoghue, Development Manager for Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing, said:

“The Hignett Place new build site was our largest project and we couldn’t be happier with the final result. A lot of hard work has gone into completing this site and it looks fantastic. I’d like to thank our building contractor Speller Metcalfe and everyone involved for their great work.”

Chris Shepherd, Neighbourhoods Manager for Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing, said:

“The scale of the transformation from the old Swan Lane to the new Hignett Place estate is scarcely believable. We’re all excited to officially unveil Hignett Place as a new community that our tenants, new homeowners and partners can be proud of.”

Hignett Place consists of 19 new affordable homes including 15 three-bedroomed and 4 two-bedroomed high-quality homes – one of which will be a bungalow that is specially designed in conjunction with Transhouse.

The majority of these will be two story houses, but the program also includes 3 bungalows. The HCA have committed £894,000 towards this program of works.

Due to STAR’s partnership with the HCA, homes will be of a very high standard (conforming to the HCA’s Housing Quality Indicators) and will be built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3. Homes will also benefit from a 12 year Premier warranty.
