University Centre Shrewsbury applicants have been given a taste of studying and living in the town.

The University Centre’s first Visit Days were held this month, for students who have applied to study an undergraduate course in 2015, as one of their shortlisted choices, or are thinking of applying for an undergraduate programme in 2016.

Each of the Visit Days, on 1 April and 18 April, started at Theatre Severn and included a welcome talk, subject sessions and an opportunity to speak to academics.

The applicants and their guests also enjoyed a tour of Shrewsbury town centre, including all University Centre Shrewsbury sites, and information stands were set up at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery to provide time to ask staff questions about accommodation, finance, Student Support and Guidance and Students Union services.

Applicants visited from counties including Shropshire, Lancashire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

Paul Kirkbright, University Centre Shrewsbury Deputy Provost, said:

“Visit Days provide a chance to showcase Shrewsbury, and the supportive and stimulating environment students can enjoy here.

“It was great to meet applicants, talk with them about their aspirations, and share more information on the opportunities that University Centre Shrewsbury and the area offers.”

The comments from people who attended included: “I liked the fact that there was a very one-to-one atmosphere in Shrewsbury.”

Another applicant said: “It was really in-depth, I could talk to them about anything I needed – it was really helpful.”

University Centre Shrewsbury is being established by the University of Chester and Shropshire Council, and welcomes its first undergraduates in September 2015. Postgraduate teaching started in 2014.
