Shropshire Council, the freehold owner of Mardol House in Shrewsbury, has submitted a planning application that would allow part of the building to be converted into living accommodation for students at the new University Centre Shrewsbury.

Mardol House – which is located between Shoplatch and Claremont Street in Shrewsbury town centre – adjoins the neighbouring Market Hall.

The building is currently empty but was previously used for office accommodation.

The planning application can be viewed on Shropshire Council’s online planning register (search for reference 15/00090/FUL), where people can also submit comments relating to the application.

Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, said:

“Over the past few months a number of options in Shrewsbury town centre have been considered for living accommodation, but we think Mardol House offers an ideal opportunity in the ideal location for student living accommodation.

“It is close to the main teaching buildings at Guildhall and Rowley’s House, and housing students there will provide a huge boost to the Shrewsbury town centre economy, as students will be able to easily visit the many shops, cafes, bars, clubs and other attractions in the town centre.”

If the planning application is approved, Shropshire Council will begin planning to convert the building, so that it is ready to welcome students in the autumn.
