Looking after yourself with your library

As World Mental Health Day approaches on Friday 10 October 2014, libraries in Shropshire are highlighting the many ways people can use library services to find help with maintaining their health and well-being.

All branch libraries stock Books on Prescription, a collection of self-help titles designed to offer assistance with common conditions such as insomnia, anxiety and low self-esteem. Library staff can also provide customers with advice on choosing uplifting and mood-boosting reads. Reading for as little as six minutes a day is sufficient to reduce stress levels by 60%, according to a 2009 Sussex University study.

Heather Rodenhurst, Shropshire Council’s library commissioning manager for health and well-being, said:

“Amid the masses of information being produced, it can sometimes be hard for people to find answers to the health worries affecting themselves or their family members. Borrowing a book with all the information in one place can be such a relief. Having a library card gives people the opportunity to do just that and also enables free access to emagazines such as Health & Fitness and Men’s Fitness UK.”

Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, libraries and culture, agreed:

“Our libraries offer a valuable form of support when it comes to helping us look after our health and well-being.  Whether that help is found via a book, through free access to the Internet, or by attending one of the many social events being held in branches for adults and children, it’s clear that libraries can make a strong contribution to achieving good mental health.”
