With the success of the London 2012 Olympics, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014 are promised to be a great follow up and it seems everyone wants to be a part of it.

Professor Rod Thomson, Shropshire Council’s director of public health, has been selected to be a volunteer at this year’s games in Glasgow.  He will be part of the venue operations team that are co-ordinating the hockey games.

Rod is still a keen hockey player and it was that particular sport that he wished to give his time to as a Commonwealth Games volunteer.

Professor Rod Thomson said:

“Volunteering is such a rewarding experience.  Whether it’s at a huge international event like the Commonwealth Games or something local such as helping out at one of your town’s charity shops, it’s a great thing to do and I would encourage anyone with the free time to get involved.

“Shropshire is full of great opportunities to help out your local community, and you’d be surprised to learn what variety of opportunities for members of the public to volunteer on a regular or occasional basis.  So I’d like to ask everyone who can afford the time to volunteer to try and get out there and lend somebody a hand.  I’d also like to thank the thousands of Shropshire people who already volunteer and make such a positive difference to their communities.”

Every day across the county volunteers are making a difference, and you don’t have to be part of a global event to get involved.  For more information about volunteering visit https://www.gov.uk/government/get-involved/take-part/volunteer.
