Sure Start children’s centres in Shrewsbury are holding their annual “Party in the Park” event in The Quarry on Thursday 19 June 2014 (10.30am to 2.30pm), and this year’s event has a child safety theme and a focus around enjoying being ‘on the go’.

Hundreds of local families are expected to join Sure Start staff and others for a fun and informative free day out and all are welcome to attend.

We hope that during the day the helicopter from RAF Shawbury will be touching down, reminding us all that our armed forces keep us safe at home and abroad.

Local services including the fire service, ambulance service and police will also be on hand with their own safety messages.

A Bitrex taste test will be on offer.  This most bitter of all substances can be added to dangerous products to stop children drinking them.   Members of the public can try it out for themselves in a test suggested by CAPT (Child Accident Prevention Trust), and anyone brave enough to try it will be rewarded by chocolate.

During the morning, storyteller Sally Tonge will entertain families and encourage children to join in with her session.  To keep us all fit and healthy a scavenger hunt walk will take place before lunch, and there will be free sessions with Tiny Dancers in the afternoon.

Healthy fruit cups will also be available for children to make.

Many other activities including crafts, sensory play, a baby area and parachute games will be available at different times throughout the day.

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic, a blanket to sit on and their swimming gear as the paddling pool has been cleaned and opened for the event.
