Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing have donated 26 gift boxes packed with toiletries, Christmas gifts and confectionary to young care leavers in Shropshire.

Staff at Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing compiled the gifts boxes over several weeks, and then organised a packing day where staff divided up the items, wrapped the boxes in Christmas paper, and handwrote cards to the young people.

The gift boxes were then collected by Shropshire Council’s children’s social work team, who will hand out the boxes to the young care leavers in the run up to Christmas.

Sue Adams, Managing Director at Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing, said:

“Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing are committed to making a positive impact in our local communities in lots of ways.  There are many young people out there on their own at Christmas, with no gifts.  Donating these gifts is not just about doing a good deed at Christmas, but showing how important we feel in supporting these young people and to raise public awareness of those young people who have faced many challenges in their lives.

“We wanted to make the gift boxes as personal as we could and hope the young people enjoy them.”

Victoria Drury, senior social worker at Shropshire Council, who put out the request for donations, added:

“Working with so many vulnerable children and families in Shropshire, it is easy to overlook those young adults who are really struggling, often with little support from family or friendship networks. The open-handed generosity with which Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing, and individuals and teams at Shropshire Council, have reached out has been truly amazing.  Throughout Shropshire during this festive period, these young people all know that someone wanted to make sure that they had a merry Christmas too.”
