Improvements to Ditherington Road shops in Shrewsbury complete

Shropshire Council has just completed a scheme to bring about improvements to the frontages of the Ditherington Road shops in north Shrewsbury. 

The scheme, which has attracted Growth Point funding of £70,000 from central government, forms part of the much larger “Northern Corridor” route project running out of Shrewsbury town centre. 

The work has included structural patches and a new tarmac surface, new bollards and fencing.  Access has been rationalised with an informal one-way system, and formal parking bays have been enhanced and marked out. 

Landscaping to either side of the shops has been improved and new footpath links installed on the other side of the road.  The work was designed and supervised by Shropshire Council’s consultant Mouchel, and construction was carried out by the council contractor Ringway. 

Alan Mosley, local Shropshire Councillor for Castlefields and Ditherington, said:

“I initiated this scheme some three years ago, and am delighted that its implementation has been much appreciated by local residents and shoppers.  The scheme has brought about a real improvement to this important commercial centre on Ditherington Road. 

“The overall appearance in itself gives a positive boost to the area and should encourage people to use the local businesses.  It’s great to see these further developments in efforts to improve all aspects of the environment in the Spring Gardens and Ditherington neighbourhoods.”

Mal Price, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for built environment – strategic planning, planning and housing, said:

“This is yet another part of the promised improvements to the Northern Corridor of Shrewsbury using the Growth Point funding from central government.  I am pleased that the work has been carried with as little inconvenience to local residents and commuters as possible.”
