A meeting is being at Shirehall in Shrewsbury on Wednesday 9 October 2013 at 6pm to launch a Friends of Lord Hill’s Column group, which would help to promote and look after The Column, and help raise funds to replace Lord Hill’s statue.

Open to all, the meeting will discuss and agree the objectives and activities of the Group and appoint a Chairman and other committee members. It will also consider ways to make more of The Column as a tourist attraction and how the Friends can help with this.

There will also be an update about the planned replacement of the statue, which won public support at a meeting on 9 September 2013.

Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury Town Council, Shropshire Tourism and the Waterloo Association are all set to be represented at the meeting, and it is hoped that the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings will be on hand to pass on their experiences of setting up and running a successful Friends group.

Keith Barrow, Leader of Shropshire Council, said:

“At the public meeting in early September there was unanimous support for replacing Lord Hill’s statue with a replica, and a lot of support for setting up a Friends of Lord Hill’s Column group to help look after the Column, and to help with fundraising. This meeting will launch the Friends group, and anyone who would like to join is welcome to join us.”
