Shropshire Council is offering free summer holiday cycling activities in Shrewsbury and Oswestry.

These are perfect for parents looking for free, fun and educational activities to keep their children entertained during the school holidays.

Activities on offer in both towns include learn to ride sessions for children who want to be able to ride without stabilisers, and cycle skills sessions for children up to the age of 12 who can ride without stabilisers but need to improve their balance, awareness or confidence so they can cycle safely on the road.

In Shrewsbury on Thursday 8 August 2013 there is a special BMX maintenance class aimed at children and teenagers at Urban Bikes in Shrewsbury Market Hall.

In both towns there will also be a family bike ride and picnic.  In Shrewsbury on Thursday 22 August 2013 families can join the wildlife and waterways ride exploring some of Shrewsbury’s best places for spotting nature.  In Oswestry on Friday 16 August 2013 families can discover the best family-friendly cycle routes around Oswestry.

Claire Wild, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for cycling, said:

“Shropshire Council is excited to be able to offer free activities during the summer holidays to get children active and help them to improve their cycling skills and road safety awareness.

“These holiday activities support the excellent work of our Sustrans Bike It officers in schools in Oswestry and Shrewsbury during term-time.”

All activities are free, but booking is essential.  Visit www.travelshropshire.co.uk/summer for full details of activities or to book a place.

The activities are being run by Sustrans and Shropshire Council, and are part-funded by the Department for Transport.

In addition to these activities, the Travel Shropshire team will be available at the Darwin Centre to offer travel information and advice on Saturdays during the school holidays, and cycling art workshops on Wednesday 14 August and Wednesday 21 August 2013.  Visit the website for more details.
