Chance to buy compost bins at discounted prices

Related topics: Community

Shropshire residents have until 1 April 2013 to buy a home compost bin at a specially discounted price.

Shropshire Council works in partnership with www.getcomposting.com to enable residents to buy discounted home compost bins.  It’s all part of a strategy which aims to reduce the amount of waste we create in Shropshire – which will help reduce waste disposal costs for the taxpayer, and protect the environment.

The standard compost bin is currently on offer for £16, but from 1 April 2013, the price will rise to £16.99.  There is also a ‘buy-one-get-one-half-price’ offer, adding extra value for people with larger gardens or those who team up with a friend or neighbour to buy a bin.

Around two-thirds of all household waste is made up of organic material and around half can be composted at home.  Grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grinds, cereal packets, shredded paper and even the contents of the vacuum cleaner bag are all ideal for home composting.

Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste management, said:

“Home composting is an excellent way of dealing with some of the daily waste that we all produce, while providing significant benefits for our gardens and the wider environment.  It is simple to do and you will be surprised at just how of your household waste can be recycled this way.

“We’ve negotiated these prices with www.getcomposting.com to make it easy for local residents to get started.”

Compost bins can be ordered via www.getcomposting.com or you can call 0844 571 4444.
