Shropshire Archives to close for a week

Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives will be closed to the public from Monday 3 December 2012 to Tuesday 11 December 2012 inclusive, to allow essential behind-the-scenes work to be completed.

Shropshire Archives at Castle Gates, Shrewsbury looks after over five and a half miles of books, documents, maps and photographs that cover over a thousand years of Shropshire’s past.

In order to improve access to this material, the service will be closed for a week so staff and volunteers can devote themselves full time to some essential back room work.

A large amount of material needs to be moved, sorted and reorganised in the storage areas.  This work cannot happen when the service is open to the public.

During this period the building’s lift is also being refurbished. The service will reopen on Wednesday 12 December 2012 at 10am, but as work will still be continuing on the lift, there may be restrictions on document requests until the Christmas period.  Customers are asked to get in touch in advance of their visit if they have any concerns.

Shropshire Archives will be closed for Christmas from Sunday 23 December 2012 to Tuesday 1 January 2013 inclusive.  The service will reopen at 10am on Wednesday 2 January 2013.
