Mytton Bridge to close for investigation work

Mytton Bridge, which carries Mytton Lane over the River Perry in Mytton, will be closed for investigation work on Monday 3 December 2012 for up to five days.

The proposed investigation work is a precursor to structural repair work which is programmed to be carried out in summer 2013 to the bridge’s south-eastern wing wall, which currently has a significant lean.

The planned investigation work will involve sinking a vertical borehole from the road alongside the bridge to confirm the nature of the soils that exist at the site.  This information is necessary to enable the planned repair work to be designed.

Unfortunately, because of the narrow nature of the bridge, it is necessary to close it to both traffic and pedestrians to carry out the investigation work safely.

When the bridge is closed, traffic will be diverted over the nearby Fitz Bridge.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for bridge maintenance, said:

“It is appreciated that the proposed bridge closure will cause some inconvenience, and everyone involved will do all that they reasonably can to reopen it as soon as possible.”

David Roberts, Shropshire Councillor for Loton and John Everall, Shropshire Councillor for Tern, said:

“It’s important that this work is carried out so that repairs can be properly carried out next year.”
