New electrical recycling banks in Wem, Market Drayton and Shifnal

New containers are now in place in Wem, Market Drayton and Shifnal to enable people to recycle their small electrical items, rather than throwing them away.

The new containers can be found at Lidl, Market Drayton; High Street, Wem; and Aston Street Car Park, Shifnal.

Small electrical items can be left in them, such as mobile phones and chargers, remote controls, computer parts, printers, keyboards, scanners, electric toothbrushes, calculators, cameras, watches, electric razors, hair straighteners, irons, and similar-sized electrical goods.

However, large electrical items such as televisions, washing machines and fridges shouldn’t be brought to these sites as they won’t fit in the containers.

The containers are provided by Veolia Environmental Services. With these three new sites, there are now 19 sites in Shropshire with special containers for recycling small electrical items.

National figures show that in the past year alone, nearly 173 million electrical items were sold in the UK (27 million of which were mobile phones).  Across the UK this leads to more than one million tonnes of electrical waste each year.

Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste management, said:

“Over a lifetime each person will go through an average of 3.3 tonnes of electrical waste, so it’s really important to recycle all old electrical items rather than throwing them in the bin. Providing these collection points will make it much easier for people to recycle small electrical items, help to keep valuable materials out of landfill, and generating more resources for manufacturing industries.”

Clement Gaubert, Veolia Environmental Services’ WEEE [Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment] Manager, added:

“We are pleased to extend our partnership with Shropshire Council by offering residents an easier way to recycle their unwanted small electrical items.  The new containers will also help to increase recycling in Shropshire and divert more WEEE from landfill.”
