Veolia’s Community ‘Wonder’ Day big success

Local residents in and around Bridgnorth had a chance to see what happens to their rubbish and recycling at a community event organised by Veolia.

Around 150 people attended the ‘Wonder’ Day event on Saturday 14 July at the new recycling centre in Faraday Drive, Bridgnorth. The event was organised to give residents an opportunity to come and find out more about their local recycling facility.

Several local community groups took part in the event selling cakes, white elephant stalls and a chocolate tombola each raising around £70 per from the day. Local girl guides were on hand with some recycling activities and the local youth centre provided face painting.  There was also a raffle in aid of the charity MIND with prizes being donated by ALDI, Boots the Chemist and M & S.

Shropshire Council has a long term waste collection and disposal contract with Veolia to manage all household waste services on behalf of the Council.

Councillor John-Hurst Knight, Deputy Cabinet Member with responsibilities for Waste Management, Recycling and Composting at Shropshire Council who attended the event said;

“Events such as Veolia’s Wonder Day are a great way to show local people what happens to their waste and recycling after they have disposed of it.  The event was really informative and gave us a great insight into the work of this fantastic new recycling centre.  It was also good to see the whole community being involved and I am delighted that the event helped raised money to support some very good causes.”

Local Councillor William Parr who also attended the event said;

“I went to Veolia’s new facility with my son for the “Wonder day” and found the staff to be most welcoming and helpful giving an insight for everyone who went along to understand more about recycling. There were numerous stalls selling a range of items and vehicles that provided much entertainment for the children. I hope Veolia have another ‘Wonder Day’ in the near future given its success.”

Local Councillor Christian Lea said;

“The Wonder Day at the Household Recycling Centre was very much a community event. Not only was there the chance to tour this recently opened recycling facility, but there was also the opportunity for children to clamber aboard a Veolia recycling lorry and view the on board camera. It was an enjoyable event for all who attended, as well as providing us the opportunity to support some very worthy local causes.”

Donald Macphail, Regional Director of Veolia said;

“The new facility in Faraday Drive consists of a recycling centre, transfer station and transport depot.  Residents are able to recycle over 30 different types of materials at the new centre.  This open day allowed members of the public to look behind the scenes and hear about what happens to the recycling and waste which is brought into the facility.”
