Shropshire Council’s pedestrian and cycle improvements on Sheet Road, Ludlow will be opening to the public on Wednesday 29 August 2012.

The package of walking and cycling improvement work has been designed for Sheet Road in Ludlow following requests from local residents and local Shropshire Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith.

The improvements will be officially opened by Councillor Taylor-Smith and include:

  • Zebra crossings on Sheet Road and Foldgate Lane
  • On-road cycle lanes on Parys Road
  • Minor traffic-calming measures on Sheet Road near the junction with Green Acres
  • Relocation of the bus stop on the town centre side of Green Acres to the east of the junction.  This will mean more bus routes are available to people from this stop.

Direction signs will also be provided to assist people walking and cycling in the area.

The project has also been supported by Ludlow Town Councillors, Ludlow Cycling Support Group and local environmental group Ludlow 21.

Martin Taylor-Smith, local Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow South, said:

“After pushing for improvements to be made in this area, it’s great to see this work has now been completed.  These improvements will make a big difference to people walking and cycling in this area of our town, and I’m sure our local residents will appreciate the improvements, particularly pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers.”

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said:

“I am delighted that the pedestrian and cycle improvements are now completed.  These will provide much improved access to the various businesses and public amenities in this area of Ludlow, including the Eco Park.”

The work was carried out by Shropshire Council’s term contractor, Ringway, and designed and supervised by their engineering consultants, Mouchel, and is part of Shropshire’s Sustainable Transport project which is funded by Department for Transport’s (DfT) Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF).

Shropshire Sustainable Transport Project has been developed to support and boost the local economy and cutting carbon emissions.  Ludlow is one of three targeted towns for Shropshire Sustainable Transport Project  to encourage and increase the number of local trips made by more sustainable modes of transport.

Other schemes the project has developed in Ludlow include improvements to cycle parking and developing a community car club.
