Come along, explore and enjoy our rich heritage at ‘Discover Shropshire Day’

Heritage and nature enthusiasts are invited to come along to ‘Discover Shropshire Day’ on Saturday 29 September.

The event will be held at Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury from 10:30am – 4:00pm, and will give visitors an opportunity to find out about the varied and rich heritage of Shropshire and the organisations who help preserve it.

Local heritage organisations from all around the county will be at the ‘Discover Shropshire Day’ event alongside representatives of museums, libraries, archives and Shropshire Wildlife Trust. Visitors to the event will be able find out what these different organisations do, what they can do for you and, maybe, what you can do for them.

Some of these groups will be giving short presentations as part of the day and before lunch archaeologist and author Nigel Baker will give a talk entitled ‘All the answers? – Medieval Shrewsbury from archives and from archaeology.’

‘Discover Shropshire Day’ will also highlight the wonderful variety of Shropshire’s outstanding collections of archives and museum objects, which range from fossils and ancient Roman treasures to medieval documents listing Shrewsbury’s inhabitants 600 years ago. There’ll also be an opportunity to discover more about heritage volunteering opportunities in Shropshire.

Sandwiches and light refreshments will be available. 

The event has been organised by Shropshire Council’s Museums and Archives Services and is part of the Heritage Lottery funded project, Volunteering for Shropshire’s Heritage.

“Shropshire’s heritage is quite outstanding and there’s such a rich diversity of activities, knowledge and interests involved that only rarely does the opportunity come along for many of these to be represented at a single event.”

“Discover Shropshire Day will showcase just how fabulous Shropshire’s archival, museum and printed heritage is but, just as importantly, will demonstrate what it means to the county’s people. It will be about a sense of place, community identity and the people who live in that place and are part of that community.”

“Shropshire is steeped in a wealth of history and the Discovery Shropshire Day at Shirehall on Saturday will give visitors a fantastic insight into this.
