National Market Day

From time to time we will be publishing news stories on Shropshire Newsroom from our partner organisations.  The following is from Oswestry Town Council:

Plans are in place for the National Market Day celebration to start in Oswestry on Saturday 23 June 2012.  Over 300 markets are planning to take part throughout the UK  in this Mary Portas initiative, with the aim to promote markets and make everyone aware of the importance they play, in terms of potential employment opportunities, start-up businesses and as a community asset.

The Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP will help provide a focus to Oswestry Markets through media attention; entertainment will be provided by the Porth-y-Waen Brass Band, face painting, rare owls and circus performers, and there will be giveaways and activities on the day providing a real sense of celebration.  Oswestry Markets are working with the museum in developing a portfolio of images of the market from the past which will be displayed in the market.  We have a improving market so let’s support and celebrate this fact.

The new market bags will be used as giveaways on the day.  Farmers Market bags will also be distributed to the public on the Farmers Market on Friday 29 June as part of the same celebration, and Tim Roberts from the local Spanish catering business Su Casa has agreed to cook free paella on the day and will help cap a week of celebration.  10% discount by all Farmers Market traders will also be offered on the day.

It is hoped each year National Market Week will become stronger and stronger throughout the country, helping to focus people’s attention back to the market place.
