Tips on saving money and healthy living at north Shropshire event

Related topics: Community

Advice on saving money and leading healthy lives on a budget will be on offer at a community event in north Shropshire next week.

A team from Shropshire Council’s Sure Start children’s centres and Wem Town Hall is hosting the event on Wednesday 23 May 2012 at the town hall.

Anyone is welcome to drop in between 10am and 12pm, and find out more about healthy living for less.

People will have the chance to watch demonstrations by Ian Fuller from Shrewsbury-based Capers on how to cook on a budget, and sample the results.

Visitors can pick up tips on how to keep healthy with quick and easy meal-time ideas, while Marches Energy Agency will be on hand with easy energy saving ideas to help reduce bills.

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, said:

“Children’s centres play an important role in helping parents in their role and improving health and well-being.

“We have been working with partners to hold a series of ‘Healthy Living on a Budget’ events and we hope that lots of people come along to this latest event on 23 May.

“This is another fantastic opportunity for people to sample some great cooking and get some handy tips and ideas on saving money and living well for less.”

Pauline Dee, a Shropshire councillor for Wem, said:

“I think that this is a wonderful idea to help us all understand how we can save money and pick up tips to make cooking on a budget easier.  I welcome any tips that will help us to save energy whilst getting advice on healthy living.  I hope that as many people as possible will attend this event which is being held in Wem Town Hall.”

Chris Mellings, also a Shropshire councillor for Wem, said:

“This is a great opportunity for local parents to pick up some practical and money-saving tips – which is always helpful in the current climate – as well as being able to sample some tasty food.  Hopefully it will also show that cooking can be fun and needn’t take up a lot of time.”
