Shrewsbury Town back Connecting Shropshire campaign

Shrewsbury Town manager, Graham Turner, has thrown his weight behind the campaign to bring better broadband to Shropshire – and has urged fans to do the same.

The Connecting Shropshire campaign is aiming to secure millions of pounds of external funding to help every property in the county have access to broadband, with as much of the county as possible having access to a superfast connection.

Shrewsbury Town manager, Graham Turner, who recently led the team to promotion to League One, said better broadband would improve links between the club and the community, as well as helping fans support the team.

He said:

“As a club, we pride ourselves on our links with the community, both in Shrewsbury and Shropshire as a whole.  We are increasingly communicating with fans all over the world through the internet, and I know lots of people listen to matches or watch highlights on our website.  Having a good broadband connection is really important for people who might not be able to get to matches to keep up with the team’s progress, and I would urge all Shrewsbury Town fans to do their bit and support the Connecting Shropshire campaign.”

Shropshire has until the beginning of June to prove to the private sector that there is demand for broadband – and people are being urged to register their details by filling in this short survey on the Connecting Shropshire website.

More than 5,000 people have pledged their support so far, but Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for IT, Martin Taylor-Smith, said he was hoping for more:

“We are really grateful to everyone who has done the survey so far, as every registration could lead to more investment in Shropshire.  I would like to thank Graham Turner and all at Shrewsbury Town for their support, and if Town fans could give this campaign their backing it would make a huge difference.”
